Spring Cleaning Your Windows

We are fully in the swing of Spring time in Ontario. April showers are finally making way for May flowers. May is the perfect time of year to embark on Spring cleaning and maintenance; after the cold and snow have passed, but before the heat of the summer takes its toll. Windows are an important addition to Spring cleaning activities. Check out this handy checklist below for cleaning and maintaining your windows this Spring.

  • Inspect the Windows: Look for signs of wear and damage such as warping of the frames, cracks or fogging in the windows, damage to balances that prevent windows from staying open, cracked or loose caulking around windows, missing or damaged weatherstripping, etc. Perhaps you even noticed some issues over the winter months that should be examined, such as drafty windows, or precipitation seeping in. This inspection is an important first step as it can help assess the need for repairs or replacement.
  • Cleaning the Glass: There are numerous well-known glass cleaning solutions on the market that are perfectly effective and safe to use on your windows, but these can be costly, especially if you have numerous windows to clean. You may also consider simply using dish soap, and warm water, or diluted vinegar in a spray bottle as more cost effective solutions.
  • Remove and Clean Screens: Screens are often overlooked in the window cleaning process, but skipping their cleaning would be a mistake. Cleaning the screens removes a significant amount of dirt and debris that become stuck to them, allowing for a fresher airflow into your home. Additionally, cleaning the screens gives us the opportunity to inspect for damages that could let pesky insects into your home. Remove the screens and wash with a mild soap and warm water. This can be done in your shower for easy clean up.
  • Clean the Window Frame: Use a vacuum to remove dirt and debris, and a wet cloth if necessary. Check for any interior damage that may have been missed on your first inspection. Once this is dry, and if damage free, windows can be reassembled.
  • Clean Window Coverings: This is the final step for Spring cleaning windows. Dust blinds and wash curtains (as outlined on label) to ensure fresh breezes for the season ahead.
